New £300,000 Girvan bandstand plan unveiled
By Roisin McGroarty
GRAND plans for Girvan’s new promenade bandstand have been unveiled showing a new look.
Architects Lawrence McPherson Associates have allowed the original Victorian ironwork to remain visible.
The new multi-purpose community facility is estimated to cost £300,000 after it was left for years in a state of disrepair with graffiti on the outside walls and rotten floors, walls and roof.
Architect John Douglas said: “We wanted to create something which was still recognisable as the original bandstand but which provided a bright contemporary building which could be used by local groups for a wide range of activities.”
Local group Crafty Women commissioned the company to come up with alternative uses for the area, supported by the local development team Horizons.
Member Winifred Wright said: “We wanted to find a way of transforming it into something that would not only enrich the appearance of the waterfront but also provide an additional resource for the local community and visitors.”
