Pool-ing together for Jessica Appeal
A YOUNG Troon girl has taken part in a high-dive fundraiser to give money to terminally ill four-year-old Jessica Findlay - by swimming a mile.
Lucy Clark decided to take on the difficult challenge after reading what other youngsters throughout South Ayrshire have been doing to get Jessica the life-saving surgery she needs.
In fact the 13-year-old managed to raise a fantastic £100 by completing the swim which included a whopping 56 lengths.
Proud mum Lisa Slater spoke about Lucy’s achievement. She said: “It took her about an hour in total, she just kept going. I’m really proud of her, it was great.”
She continued: “We’ve just been getting your paper every week and reading all that everyone is doing. Lucy also met Jessica a couple of times at the Troon youth club - I think all the kids there thought she was lovely and really cute.
“I also think when it is another child it makes them think a lot more about what she is going through. When Lucy read about Callie Hart doing a sponsored silence she said she thought she could do something like that and then just decided on a one mile swim.
“It only took her a week to get sponsors. She made up her own sponsor form and printed it out and then it was filled out by her gran and all the family and friends she knows.”
Lucy took the challenge at Troon pool along while watched by an Ayr diving instructor and family friend Peter Smith.
The Queen Margaret Academy pupil is already an active girl with after school lessons in karate and Irish dancing.
The money will now be put towards getting the experimental surgery in California that will rebuild all her arteries and give her a new heart and lungs.
