Villagers star on TV quiz
By Roisin McGroarty
A GROUP of Symington residents have walked awayas big winners from TV’s Postcode Challenge - even though they didn’t get a penny.
Recently appearing on the STV show the KA1 5RA team included Sandra Boyd, team captain Dugald MacIntyre, June Gournley and her husband David, Jack McPhail and Alan Gasney.
They didn’t even make it into the show’s final but have walked away with huge smiles.
Sandra, 46, from Brewlands Crescent spoke about the day. She said: “It was actually quite a good laugh, it was a great day from beginning to end. We went in as a team and we went out as a team.
“They even arranged a car to pick us up so they took us right in, we were meant to get a car back but we decided to make a day of it and have a good time in Glasgow.”
But the friends didn’t even think they would get on the show with Sandra adding: “I saw the advert on the TV and thought it would make the phone call for a laugh and we got picked.
“I think we started filming about 8.30am, it was really early and we were in for a good few hours as we got out before lunch. We were even the first to light up the first half of our Postcode sign on the show with our right answers but then everyone else was just quicker than us.
“It was nerve-wracking for us but the staff really did make us feel welcome. Carol Smillie was even great, she is a nice person though we only talked to her for a short time.”
The group’s opening film was shot at Symington Bowling Club where a few of them host a regular race nights.
Sandra already has her hands full with five children including Ross, 15, Amee, 10 and Jamie, 8, while her other two girls Kerry, 27, and Melanie, 22, have already left home.
She continued: “On the night it was on I watched it with everyone in my house, we called it a wee Postcode party but I did feel terrible seeing myself on telly - I felt the cameras added ten pounds on me.
“But everyone had such a good time, I’d definitely do something like this again.”
Speaking about the group, a spokeswoman from the show said: “Sandra and the rest of the team from Symington did a great job on the show and we’re glad they enjoyed their day on the Postcode Challenge set.”
